Genesis of 20 Convents in Salem Province

SMMI CONVENT KAKKAVERI - (2005)

Divine providence has been amidst us to initiate and inaugurate women center responding to the decisions of the provincial chapter 2003. It came to pass with a land with an old building at Kakkaveri in 2004.

MISSION OF THE COMMUNITY :
  • To take active participation in the pastoral activities especially through Anbiyams (BCC) and Legion of Mary.
  • Provide shelter to the abandoned women and children by way of short stay home.
  • Provide counseling and guidance to the women who are trafficked, unwed mothers and victims of domestic violence.
  • Empowerment of women through SHGs activities.
ORIGIN OF THE COMMUNITY :
    • The construction of the building was started in 2004. On 2nd April 2005 the solemn inauguration of our renovated building of kakkaveri by Mr.Chrisso Nayakam IAS, then collector of Namakkal, blessed by his Excellency Most.Rev.Dr.S. Singaroyan the Bishop of Salem in the presence of Sr.Jane Scaria, the Superior General of SMMI Congregation. The following categories of the women were the target to fulfill the Charism of our SMMI Congregation.
    • (i) Abandon women.
      (ii)Trafficked women.
      (iii)Unwed mothers.
             (iv)Women who ran away from their homes.
  • The pioneers of the mission of Kakkveri namely: Sr.Francina, Sr.Philomina and Sr.Lourdu Mary entered to render their service to the people. Sr.Francina was appointed as the Superior of this Convent.
  • In 2005 the objective of our mission was initiated by accommodating the women in the Old tiled building that was existed.
  • The women empowerment was accomplished by the social activities of our sisters such as giving education on fashion technology, catering and professional studies to the women.
  • In 2005, our sisters started Self Help Groups to empower women of the surrounding villages. The number of SHGs increased gradually. The women have proved their credit worthiness. They run several economic units like stationary shops, small hotels and coffee bars, handicrafts and lady’s special shops, cattle rearing, goat rearing etc.
  • In 2008 Health Centre was constructed bearing the name of our patron St.Francis de sales to treat HIV /AIDS patients.
  • Our sisters started VIDIVELLI Community College to the poor young girls and the girls from the families who are affected by Leprosy, TB and HIV. This one year certificate course is affiliated to Tamil Nadu Open University. Every year some girls have benefited from this community college.
