Genesis of 20 Convents in Salem Province
OUR LADY OF LOURDES CONVENT KOTTAPALAYAM - (1958)
MISSION OF THE COMMUNITY :
- To give good education to the rural girl children.
- To extend immediate medical care to the needy and the poor.
- To involve in the pastoral activities of the Parish and faith formation of the people.
- To provide an opportunity for village women to become self-reliant through tailoring.
ORIGIN OF THE COMMUNITY :
- In 1958 Fr.Abraham the parish priest approached Mother Marie Francoise the Superior of Holy Angels Convent, Kumbakonam asked for our sisters to start a dispensary at Kottapalayam. The dispensary was opened on 02.07.1958.
- On 26th Oct 1963 the dispensary was constructed and opened. Residence for sisters also was attached within it.
- As there was no other school for the education of girls in and around Kotttapalayam our sisters purchased a land on 25thJuly 1966 and constructed the high school for the girls.
- Subsequently in July 2001 the Higher Secondary Section was started. A parallel section of English medium section has been added later.
- On 1st June 1968 Kottapalayam became an independent house. On 8th Dec 1988 a new grotto was erected.
- In 1992 the Needle work section was initiated to give occupation to jobless poor women in the first floor of the dispensary.
- Subsequently in July 2001 the Higher Secondary Section was started. Today about 2500 girl children are studying in this school. A parallel section of English medium has been added later.
